The Transformative Power of Apprenticeships in Education by Tracy Clement
The Impact of Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships have long played a pivotal role in professional development within the Early Years sector. More recently, they have expanded to bridge the gap between formal education and real-world skills, across the wider education landscape. These structured training programmes allow people to gain hands-on experience while earning a salary, making career advancement more accessible and inclusive to everyone.
At Best Practice Network (BPN), we recognised the untapped potential of apprenticeships and, in 2021, used our expertise in CPD and qualifications to launch apprenticeships that support school leaders and increase understanding of apprenticeships across the sector. The impact has been profound.
"Best Practice Network is transforming the education sector, one apprentice at a time."
Empowering Thousands Through Apprenticeships
Since launching our apprenticeships, over 1260 professionals have successfully completed their programmes to date, with nearly half (47%) achieving high-level pass rates (Merit + Distinction). Our growing impact includes:
• 457 graduates in School Leadership
• 124 Teaching Assistants completing their apprenticeships
• 36 Initial Teacher Training apprentices
• 645 Early Years professionals (Levels 2, 3, and 5)
With over 3,860 apprentices currently enrolled across a broad range of programmes, we are proud to have cemented ourselves as the leading apprenticeship provider.
What makes BPN apprenticeships stand out?
In my opinion, it’s our hybrid training model, tailored to meet the specific demands of the education and Early Years sectors. We understand that flexibility, accessibility, and relevance are key to effective learning. Some of our unique initiatives include:
- Tailored cohorts for employers, ensuring sector-specific training.
- Flexible training schedules to accommodate Teaching Assistants, Early Years professionals, and school leaders.
- IT support for apprentices facing digital access barriers (e.g., loaned laptops for those in IT poverty).
- Multiple session time options for Early Years apprentices to fit around work commitments.
- Innovative learning methods, including SCORM packages, online classrooms, recorded sessions, and personal tutoring.
Enhancing Career Progression and Development
BPN doesn’t just focus on helping apprentices complete their programmes—we’re committed to supporting their long-term career progression. Initiatives such as BPN Boost provide apprentices with:
- Career advice and guidance tailored to their ambitions.
- Professional development opportunities through online teaching, podcasts, and membership to the Association of Apprentices (for extensive CPD resources).
- Specialist learning support, including a dedicated SENCo team assisting over 445 apprentices with additional learning needs.
- Functional Skills support in Maths and English, helping apprentices gain essential qualifications.
Many of our apprentices progress to higher education and leadership roles, with Nottingham Trent University now offering a Level 6 top-up degree for our Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprentices. This initiative has already seen eight graduates successfully transition to degree-level study.
Bridging Skills Gaps and Strengthening Organisations
Beyond individual success, apprenticeships can be a strategic investment for educational institutions. By building apprenticeships into their workforce development strategies, schools and nurseries can:
- Develop skilled employees who align with the organisation’s values.
- Reduce recruitment costs and improve staff retention.
- Build a culture of mentorship, knowledge sharing and professional excellence.
With the education sector facing a significant skills gap, BPN is actively supporting employers by offering recruitment services to connect them with talented apprentices who are eager to grow and make a difference.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
One of the most impactful aspects of our apprenticeships is our commitment to accessibility. Our apprenticeships are designed to break down barriers and support social mobility, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds can access high-quality education and training.
We also recognise the importance of inclusivity in assessments—our specialist support team ensures that apprentices with additional learning needs receive exam concessions and personalised guidance to help them succeed.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Apprenticeships
As we continue to grow, BPN is expanding its portfolio with exciting new apprenticeship offers, such as:
- Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5
- Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 with Thrive Licensed Practitioner
- Operations Manager Level 5 with Thrive Licensed Practitioner
Apprenticeships are more than just qualifications—they are an investment in talent, diversity, and long-term success. Through our tailored training, unwavering support, and commitment to excellence, Best Practice Network is transforming the education sector, one apprentice at a time.
