National Apprenticeship Week 2025: Serreah’s story

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’ve been asking our apprentices to share their stories.

Meet Serreah, an Early Years Practitioner Apprentice at Snapdragon’s Nursery, Cribbs Causeway, Bristol. Here Serreah tells us why she decided on an apprenticeship and why she has always wanted to work in Early Years.

Why did you go for an apprenticeship and why Early Years?

“I decided to do an Early Years Practitioner Level 2 apprenticeship because I like to work hands-on and learn as I go, and that’s what an apprenticeship does for you. I feel I take it in better this way, rather than only learning the theory.

“From 11 years old I used to help my two aunties, who were foster carers, look after the children. I just loved it. Ever since then I’ve always known I wanted to work in Early Years.”

What do you love most about working in childcare and Eary Years?

“I just love walking into the room in the morning and the children shouting your name. It’s like one big family.”

What do you like most about your apprenticeship so far?

“There are loads of apprentices here at Snapdragon’s of different ages, all supporting each other. It can be quite scary to start an apprenticeship, but we all help each other."

Has anything surprised you about your apprenticeship?

“This is my first job, so I have had to teach myself how best to get support from staff and find the best way of working to suit me. I suspect I have ADHD and sometimes I have struggled with that. My Best Practice Network tutor, Naomi, has been brilliant though, and has supported me to do my best. She has been very helpful."

In your opinion, what are the benefits of an apprenticeship?

“It’s easier than learning at school! For me, anyway. You aren’t just sat down, you are up and about learning. And best of all, you get paid to learn!"

Where do you hope your apprenticeship will take you in 10 years’ time?

“I’ll wait a year before doing my Level 3, then explore a reception school setting. I’m interested in becoming a Teaching Assistant in a school, pastoral work or becoming a foster carer."

What would you say to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship?

“Do it! I love working and learning together, and you earn money at the same time!"

Serreah is currently about to take her End Point Assessment – the final stage to complete her Level 2 apprenticeship – so please join us in wishing her enormous luck. We know you will smash it!
