Rebecca Wilkins - How EYITT Supports Career Progression in Early Years

Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) is a DfE-funded 12-month programme that equips early years educators with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to excel in their careers. It provides a pathway for professional development, leadership growth, and enhanced teaching practice.
Rebecca Wilkins, a dedicated early years professional, shares how completing the EYITT programme through Best Practice Network helped her progress into a leadership role, refine her teaching, and positively impact her setting.
Developing Leadership Skills and Confidence
With 15 years of experience in childcare and a passion for early years education, Rebecca took on the EYITT to enhance her practice and advance her career. Now the Manager of a Pre-School, she attributes her progression to the valuable skills and knowledge gained through the programme.
Throughout the course, Rebecca deepened her understanding of child development, using this knowledge to support and challenge her team. The EYITT enabled her to confidently lead a diverse group of practitioners, each with varying levels of experience, ensuring a high standard of teaching and learning in her setting.
“EYITT gave me the confidence to lead, mentor, and drive positive change in my setting. It’s a challenging journey, but one that truly transforms your practice.”
A Supportive Learning Journey
A key highlight of Rebecca’s EYITT experience was the strong support system. Her personal tutor was always available, providing reassurance and guidance whenever needed. Whether it was a phone call for clarity or in-person visits to observe her practice, this support was invaluable.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the peer network. Rebecca strongly recommends making use of Face-to-Face training days to share knowledge and bounce ideas off fellow trainees. Everyone was navigating the same challenges, and discussions about time management and best practices proved to be essential.
Another standout opportunity provided by the course was the placement experience, something she wouldn’t have been able to arrange independently due to logistical challenges. This placement allowed Rebecca to gain a clearer understanding of the age group she wanted to work with and provided insight into how early learning for two-year-olds connects to later educational stages.
Making a Lasting Impact in the Setting
The EYITT programme has not only helped Rebecca grow professionally but has also had a significant impact on her setting. Shortly after completing the course, she led her first OFSTED inspection as Manager and achieved an OUTSTANDING rating.
Her ability to confidently conduct a learning walk and articulate the Pre-School’s vision played a key role in this achievement. Additionally, she has introduced wrap-around care to support children transitioning to school and has taken on the role of mentoring future EYITT trainees.
Her staff have also recognised her growth, noting her enthusiasm for continuous improvement, her ability to adapt her teaching methods to meet diverse needs, and her commitment to fostering a reflective and forward-thinking team.
Rebecca’s experience demonstrates how the EYITT programme facilitates career progression and leadership growth in early years education. From gaining a managerial position to achieving an Outstanding OFSTED rating, her journey highlights the transformational impact of high-quality training.
EYITT empowers educators to lead with confidence, inspire their teams, and drive continuous improvement in early childhood education, ensuring the best possible outcomes for young learners.
"A week after completing the course, I had my first OFSTED at Pre-School as Manager and gained OUTSTANDING grading which I’m thrilled about. I completed the learning walk and was confident in talking about the Pre-School."
