Early Years Initial Teacher Training - a great start to the year

We are delighted that the DfE has used two Best Practice Network case studies on the Early Years ITT website.

Excellent feedback

Early Years Teacher Status is now in its second year - 293 of the first birth to five specialist teachers trained with Best Practice Network. We are also delighted to have had excellent feedback:

“Thank you all for all the support during my journey to Early Years Teacher Status. I really can't praise Best Practice Network enough for such a challenging yet enjoyable programme. It is hard to believe how far I have come. Most importantly, at the outset, I wanted the children that I work with to benefit most from the programme and I am pleased to say that I believe they have done so.”

Our EYITT programmes for 2014 are now up and running across England, working in partnership with six ITT providers – Anglia Ruskin University, Bath Spa University, Doncaster ITT Partnership, School Centred ITT in East London Schools (SCITTELS) and the Universities of Warwick and Wolverhampton.

Although recruitment has closed for the September 2014 intake for the funded EYITT routes, there are still places available for the Assessment Only Route. This route is for highly experienced Early Years Practitioners, it takes 3 months to complete and can start anytime throughout this academic year. Please see our EYITT programme page for further details.

New development

To support our trainee Early Years Teachers to aspire to excellence, we have developed a set of Assessment Descriptors, based on the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years) and taking Ofsted requirements into account. The Assessment Descriptors prioritise high standards of care in parallel with age appropriate teaching and will be used to set targets for trainee progress and to make formative and summative assessment judgements.

Webinars have been used to introduce the Assessment Descriptors to personal tutors, trainees and mentors in settings and schools. Feedback has also been excellent:

“I’m really looking forward to working using this approach. It is clear the amount of time and research that has gone into it.”

"I like the Webinar approach- it is a great way to pass on information."
