Who is this for?

The programme has been designed to support all chairs of governors, whether you are aspiring, new to the role or well-established.

What are the benefits?

This programme will develop your skills as a leader, increase your effectiveness to drive improvement and improve learning outcomes for children and young people.

During the programme you will:

How is it delivered?

The programme is delivered either as a coached online model or a blended learning model and will take around nine months to complete. Whichever delivery model you choose, you will be supported and guided by experienced governor trainers and mentors.

At the start of the programme you will complete a 360° leadership skills review to gain an understanding of your current leadership skills and help shape your learning journey.

The programme has three cores units that focus on the essential elements of governor leadership:

  • Unit 1: The role of the chair
  • Unit 2: Leading the governing body and effective governance
  • Unit 3: Leading change and continuous improvement

The units comprise of online activities (25 learning hours) alongside school-based learning. At every stage you will receive support and coaching from your BPN mentor. You will engage in discussions, have opportunities to share good practice with peers and access the most relevant and up to date resources.

You will select the most relevant school-based enquiries from a choice of nine and carry out these enquiries with the support of your mentor throughout. For example as part of Unit 1 you can choose to:

  • Explore the way you lead the governing body, or
  • Investigate approaches to performance management of head teachers and reflect on how the approach in your school may be improved, or
  • Focus on gaining a greater knowledge and understanding of effective recruitment of senior staff.

These school based activities are related to the learning aims for each unit and provide an opportunity to try out what you have learned.
