Clerks’ Development Programme

The Clerks’ Development Programme has been designed by the National College for Teaching and Leadership for new and experienced Clerks to develop their professional knowledge, understanding, skills and competence. The aim of the programme is to enable clerks to contribute effectively to the governance of their governing body and their school.


Who is this for?

The Clerks’ Development Programme is for new or experienced clerks to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of their role, and outline the responsibilities and functions of a clerk and the governing body. On completion of the programme you will have a thorough understanding of the governance, structures and regulations that you need to work within to be an effective clerk.

This programme is offered in two different ways. Our coached online model consists of webinar sessions, online modules and regular one-to-one conversations with an experienced mentor. Alternatively, if you are part of a network of schools, contact us to arrange a bespoke blended learning group and access face-to-face and online facilitation.

  • Gain the skills and knowledge to help the overall success of their governing body and its effectiveness in supporting and driving school improvement
  • Achieve a nationally recognised certificate from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL)

How is it delivered?

The programme is delivered through two delivery models; a coached online model and a blended learning model.

The coached online Clerks’ Development Programme consists of around 35 learning hours and is delivered over a nine month period. Participants will engage with:

  • Online web conferences facilitated by experienced and high quality facilitators
  • Online units completed using our purpose built virtual learning environment
  • School-based activities that provide a real and practical benefit to you and your school
  • A learning log to reflect on practice and identify areas of improvement
  • Peer support from other participants, sharing practice, thinking and learning
  • Mentor support from experienced clerks
  • In-depth reading and research to developing thinking and learning

We are able to run a bespoke blended learning programme for school networks with 10 or more clerks wishing to complete the qualification. Contact us to find out more and schedule training in your locality.

What does it cost?

The National College for Teaching and Leadership provide full scholarship funding for this programme. Scholarship funding is allocated on a first come first served basis and is limited, so please apply early to avoid missing out. Funding is only available for 1 applicant per state-funded school a year. Additional places are available for a fee of £320 per participant.
